United Kingdom News

LONDON, 21 April, 2026 – Lockheed Martin UK, in collaboration with Indra, Leonardo, and three MBDA subsidiaries (IT, GE, UK) have been selected for Concept Study 2 (Modularity) by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) based on work jointly delivered during Concept Study 1 (System Architecture).
THE BIG PICTURE
Lockheed Martin UK is bringing together deep expertise across the Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) market to deliver a robust study output for Concept Study 2 (CS2) and continue to shape the critical Modular GBAD requirements for NATO. The aim is to use the team’s collective experience to provide the Modular GBAD participating Nations with proven and innovative solutions and technologies in support of NATO Modular GBAD capabilities.
WHY IT MATTERS
- Sustain momentum in continuing critical work through CS2 and beyond for the NATO Modular GBAD requirements.
- Decades of GBAD expertise and heritage give Lockheed Martin, Indra, Leonardo and 3 MBDA subsidiaries (IT, GE, UK) a deep understanding of Modular GBAD participating Nation’s requirements for operationally relevant capabilities, informed by real-world NATO missions and evolving multi-domain threats.
- To ensure NATO is provided with the best solution at pace, this approach brings together expertise, programme management and engineering excellence to accelerate innovation and deliver a single, cohesive capability that is cost-effective, operationally seamless, interoperable and aligned to the joint threat picture - benefits that would not be realised through a single-company approach.
EXPERT PERSPECTIVES
“NATO requires solutions that work seamlessly across allied nation systems. A multi-company approach ensures interoperability is built in from the start, said Mark Langley, head of Complex Systems, Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill. “This collaboration enables us to help shape NATO’s future Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) requirements with a truly European solution. By combining Lockheed Martin’s multi-domain integration expertise with the skills and expertise across Indra, Leonardo, and MBDA, we can deliver a tailored, cost-effective, and future-ready GBAD capability.”
“Given the emergence of new threats to air and missile defense, the industry must be able to provide multi-domain, multi-layer, and in-depth integrated solutions that enable NATO member countries to ensure their sovereignty and security,” said Francisco Jiménez, head of business development, Air Defense at Indra. “The joint effort of the companies involved in this project seeks to provide interoperable modular architectures with the flexibility to counteract to the present threats and evolve easily according to future challenges of GBAD within the framework of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence.”
“MBDA is a leading and integrated European group and shaping interoperability among NATO allies' air defence systems is a crucial part of the group’s work. With decades of experience providing solutions for complex weapons requirements globally, MBDA is putting its value of cooperation into doing what it always does: finding a way to deliver what its customers need,” said Giuseppe Faranda, vice president, NATO and EU institutions at MBDA. “Working toward standardisation through this Concept Study, alongside leading defence companies, and at the service of NATO, aligns precisely with MBDA’s vision.”
“Leonardo has relevant experience in supplying GBAD sensors and integrating systems at NATO level,” said Antonio Levato, senior vice president Air and Land Systems Land and Sea Business at Leonardo. “Together with outstanding international partners, we are designing efficient modular solutions that minimise integration time and costs, while delivering operational flexibility, scalability and interoperability among Allied Forces.”
